Grant to help rehab foreclosed properties

A $100,000 Greater Milwaukee Foundation grant has boosted ACTS Housing’s capacity to help low-income families purchase and renovate vacant and vandalized foreclosures in Milwaukee’s inner-city neighborhoods.

The grant, to be distributed to ACTS Housing over two years, is supporting the community organization’s foreclosure reclamation programs, which connect Milwaukee families with sustainable homeownership and revitalize neighborhoods in the process.

“This grant will allow ACTS Housing to continue to turn renters to owners, houses to homes, and blocks to communities,” said Carl Quindel, executive director of ACTS Housing.

In the last two years, ACTS Housing has assisted more than 170 families in purchasing foreclosed properties. Sixty of the properties ACTS Housing secured were tax foreclosed properties that were draining city resources, according to the organization.

About 1,400 properties still belong to the city, Quindel said, and the recent grant will enable ACTS to turn more of these “vacant, vandalized houses into safe and code compliant homes.”

The recent grant stems from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Connie Fischer/Family Foundation Fund, Marjorie Pazik Herrewig Memorial Fund, Dr. Abraham B. and Irma F. Schwartz Fund, and the Charles Edgar Albright and Laura Uihlein Albright Fund.
