Funky Fresh Spring Rolls

Milwaukee’s own Funky Fresh Spring Rolls was recently named as one of 10 winners nationally in the 5th annual FedEx Small Business Grant Contest. FedEx will be giving Funky Fresh, a bronze level winner, a grant of $7,500 and $1,000 in FedEx Office services that Funky Fresh plans to use to help get its products into grocery stores.

“Marking our fifth year of the FedEx Grant contest, we saw a broad range of small business owners with diverse interests who all exhibited a great passion for their business,” said Becky Huling, vice president of Customer Engagement Marketing at FedEx. “FedEx is committed to empowering diverse individuals and giving entrepreneurs everywhere the tools they need to succeed. “

Funky Fresh was founded by Trueman McGee as part of his quest to live a healthier lifestyle. A laid off construction worker who determined he needed to change his life, McGee decided it was time to exercise more and eat healthier. While the exercise came by way of local parks and an old tractor tire, he turned to spring rolls for his diet, and Funky Fresh was born. Now McGee’s healthy eating habits can be found via Funky Fresh Spring Rolls at local farmers markets and festivals, and hopefully in a grocery stores in the very near future.

“I started Funky Fresh Spring Rolls because I wanted to share my passion for healthy living and eating with others,” McGee said. “I’m honored to be one of 10 national winners of the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest and look forward to using my winnings to take Funky Fresh to the next level.”

The 2017 contest attracted candidates from across the United States and garnered more than 1.5 million votes. Over the past five years, more than 13,000 businesses have entered the contest in the United States alone. The contest has now grown from one country to nine countries and the grant pool for the U.S. contest has grown from $50,000 to more than $120,000 in total prizes.
