Cancer of the head and neck affects more than 52,000 people nationwide every year, according to the American Cancer Society, and it can take away things most people take for granted like speech, eating and appearance.
To spread awareness of the disease and encourage people to get screened, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin clinical staff will provide free screenings on Wednesday, April 15 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Froedtert & MCW Clinical Cancer Center, located on the Froedtert Hospital campus.
Head and neck cancer includes cancers of the mouth, tongue, throat, neck, vocal cords, sinuses, tonsils and salivary glands. The cancer is highly curable if found early.
People who are recommended for a screening are those who have known risk factors for these cancers or who have any unexplained changes such as a lump in the tongue, neck or lip, or changes in swallowing, speech or breathing.
