The joke was this: when Autumn Kastein’s beauty pageant pupils needed new clothes, they could always go shopping in Autumn’s closet, Kastein’s cache of gently used threads.
Thrift and resale stores have always enamored Kastein. As a kid, she and her family shopped at them out of necessity. They couldn’t afford to drop $20 on a T-shirt at the higher-end stores, she said.
