Five-story apartment building planned on Jackson Street near downtown

New building would be located behind The Rhythm

The developer of The Rhythm, a high-end apartment building currently under construction on North Water Street, is planning a five-story apartment building directly behind it on North Jackson Street in downtown Milwaukee.

An affiliate of Milwaukee-based developer Wiechmann Enterprises has filed a resolution with the city of Milwaukee to vacate a portion of the alley in the block bounded by East Pleasant Street, North Jackson Street and North Water Street.

The alley is in between The Rhythm, 1632 N. Water St.,  and the proposed new apartment at 1623-1639 N. Jackson St. The alley would be used as an entrance to underground parking for the new building, said Gile Tojek, who made the request under the LLC GET Jackson. Tojek is the property manager at Wiechmann Enterprises.

The Jackson Street property consists of five lots. Three of the lots are vacant; the other two have homes on them, Tojek said.

Tojek said his company is still in negations with the city about the size and number of apartments the building would have. He would not comment further on the project and referred all questions to Jim Wiechmann, who could not immediately be reached for comment.

The 140-unit Rhythm apartment building is being developed by Tim Gokhman and Wiechmann. Scott Kindness is the architect.

The Public Works Committee will review the request to vacate the alley next month.
