FedEx SmartPost HQ to move from New Berlin to Brookfield

FedEx will move the headquarters of its SmartPost subsidiary from New Berlin to the Brookfield Lakes Corporate Center XI building at 17950 W. Corporate Drive, according to Andrew Weltcheff, senior vice president of asset management for Hammes Company, which owns the building.

 
The company is renting the entire building, which has 79,228 square feet of rentable office space.

FedEx SmartPost, a wholly-owned subsidiary of FedEx Ground, is a residential shipping service designed for online and catalog retailers with last-mile delivery by the U.S. Postal Service. The service focuses largely on high volumes of lighter weight packages whose delivery is less-time sensitive.   

“The service is one of the fastest growing in the FedEx family of transportation services,” said Erin Truxal, spokesperson for FedEx Ground.

The headquarters for FedEx SmartPost is currently located in a 392,793-square-foot building at 16555 W. Rogers Dr. in New Berlin.

FedEx will move the SmartPost headquarters to the Brookfield office building in early 2014.  

“The new facility will replace the current headquarters facility in New Berlin, allowing us to continue to meet and exceed customer demands,” said Truxal. “When the facility opens, all positions will transfer from the existing headquarters, and we will add to the workforce as necessary. The hub operations will continue to operate out of the existing facility in New Berlin.”

The Brookfield building, formerly occupied by AT&T, is located in the Brookfield Lakes Corporate Center and is highly visible along the north side of I-94. The building was built in 1989 and has been vacant since 2010.

Hammes has requested a commercial tenant improvement permit from the Brookfield building inspection department for the building. The estimated cost of the tenant improvement work is $2 million. In addition, Hammes Company received city approval recently to expand the parking lot at the building. Hammes also made improvements to the interior and exterior of the building in 2010. The basement of the building was converted from storage to a parking area for 11 vehicles. The lobby was remodeled. On the exterior of the building the façade was improved with the removal of masonry, which was replaced with glass, on the second and third floors.
