Joint Finance Committee Co-chair Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and Sen. Randy Hopper, a Fond du Lac Republican on the committee, are pushing back against Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed changes to the SeniorCare program.
Darling and Hopper said they want to keep the popular prescription drug program for seniors “as-is."
Walker’s 2011-13 budget proposal would require eligible seniors to enroll in Medicare Part D. The move would save the state $15 million.
“As we began to look at the governor’s budget, it became clear to us immediately that we needed to preserve SeniorCare," Hopper said. "I have not had a single senior tell me SeniorCare has got to go.”
“As we work through the budget, we’ll be looking for ways we can makes the changes we need to be able to restore this funding,” Darling added. “But that’s the commitment we’re making today – we will find a way to preserve SeniorCare.”
Both lawmakers are the targets of recall attempts. The head of the committee targeting Hopper said this week his group has enough signatures to trigger a recall election against him.
