Everest College to close downtown campus

Everest College announced last week that it will close its downtown Milwaukee campus, located in the 2-story, 67,500-square-foot building northwest of North 6th Street and West McKinley Avenue.

Everest College is a private college owned and operated by Santa Ana, Calif.-based Corinthian Colleges Inc. The Everest College downtown Milwaukee campus opened in 2010.
“Last week, the campus announced that it will teach-out all existing programs,” said Bob Johnson, president of Everest College. “We made the decision to teach-out Everest-Milwaukee because…the campus was not meeting Corinthian’s job placement standards. That means that the school will continue to operate until all current students have the opportunity to complete their program, participate in externships, graduate and receive job placement services.”
Some critics of the company said city should have denied a permit to open the campus, saying that students often ended up with excessive levels of debt and received a low quality education.
“My position has always been that the college is not an educational institution but rather an educational business with a goal of profit, not placement,” said. Ald. Milele Coggs. “In my opinion, Everest had not been student-focused and was geared instead simply to make as much money as possible.”
The Everest College building is part of the Haymarket Square development, developed by Dan Druml.
“I have requested that the Department of City Development assist the facility owners as much as is possible to find a viable tenant that co-exists well with the existing neighbors and will attract additional quality development in the area.”
