Diez honored with Postal Service Award

Mary Diez, Ph.D., dean of graduate studies at Alverno College in Milwaukee has been named a recipient of the 2010 United States Postal Service award, “Women Putting Their Stamp on Metro Milwaukee,” for her outstanding achievements in the field of education.
For the past 20 years, Diez has played a lead role in securing and directing more than $3.36 million in various grants from local and national foundations to support administrator and teacher development and student assessment programs in Milwaukee-area schools, primarily Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). In October 2009, Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education singled out Alverno for excelling in its job to prepare teachers during his highly critical speech on the state of education. One of the key individuals behind Duncan’s commendation was Diez, who has gained local, national and international recognition in the higher education field for her innovative work and research on teacher preparedness. Nearly 250 women have been honored with the award since its inception more than 12 years ago.
