Mequon-based developer Shaffer Development was chosen by the city to purchase the 13.4 acre site,  just east of Mequon Road and Buntrock Avenue, earlier this year for $1. The city is hoping for a project similar to the nearby mixed-use Mequon Town Center development.

Cindy Shaffer presented her plans for Heritage Commons Tuesday, which include one to two apartment buildings with approximately 70 residential units and approximately 8-12 town home units.

The existing public works buildings on the site will be repurposed to house the retail component of the development.

Current interest in these buildings is high and potential anchor tenants are being vetted, Shaffer said in a statement.

Another potential competent of the project is a boutique hotel. If a hotel is not feasible, the Mequon Common Council has requested an alternative that would include additional residential units, Shaffer said.

Final decisions regarding the site cannot be made until the results of all environmental and geo-technical reports are completed. A planned unit development for the site is expected to be approved in late spring or early summer.

The public works department will be located on the site until 2017.

Shaffer, who invested $700,000 in two of the five parcels that comprise the Mequon Town Center, said she believes the Heritage Commons site also has great potential.
