Old-fashioned, two-way football appears to be headed back to Wrigley Field.
The Chicago Cubs today went before the Commission on Chicago Landmarks’ permit review committee to outline potential changes to the historic North Side ballpark, including a plan to move the brick wall behind home plate forward 3 feet to create 56 new seats. The committee voted 5-1 to approve the Cubs’ recommended changes.
While that revenue-generating change would affect the baseball playing field, a revision to another portion of the famous brick wall appears geared toward bringing college football back to the Friendly Confines.
The ballclub also received permission to reconfigure a nearly 12-foot-long section of the wall along the third-base line so that it would become movable. The ability to lift and remove that portion with a forklift would pave the way for the first college football game at Wrigley since 2010.
