Cranberry Growers launch consumer education campaign

The United Cranberry Growers Cooperative (UCGC), based in Wausau, today launched Be Berry Aware, a new consumer education campaign to help consumers identify high-quality cranberry juices that pack the nutritional benefits.

According to the organization, most people know that cranberries have a multitude of health benefits, but many consumers do not know which cranberry juices actually have a significant amount of cranberry content.

Cranberries are heart healthy, promote urinary tract health, a rich source of antioxidants, a good source of dietary fiber, and contain no fat, no cholesterol and very little sodium. The campaign suggests consumers read the label for guidance. Cranberry juice should be the very first juice listed.

“Collectively polyphenols represent a ‘fingerprint’ of the cranberry fruit. Our innovative techniques provide information both quantitatively (how much of the compound is present) and qualitatively (what is the shape and complexity of the compound). This information is used for authenticity, standardization and efficacy evaluation of cranberry products,” said Christian Krueger, a research scientist and CEO of Complete Phytochemical Solutions LLC, who performed the testing on the juice products.
