The latest Wisconsin Job Watch from the Center On Wisconsin Strategy (COWS), reporting on May 2009 data, shows a continuing decline in the number of jobs in Wisconsin, though the rate of job loss has slowed considerably.
According to the latest COWS Wisconsin Job Watch report, on average, the state lost 18,650 jobs each month in the six months leading up to April 2009; from April to May, the number of jobs lost was 2,100, a fraction of the previous month’s decline.
Wisconsin’s unemployment rate now stands at 8.9 percent, nearly double the rate of unemployment at the start of the recession in December 2007.
While manufacturing has continued to decline, there have been some gains in the construction sector. The report indicates that between April and May, the construction sector gained 2,000 jobs.
