Concordia University Wisconsin plans to build a three-story, 700-space parking structure on the west side of its Mequon campus, located northeast of I-43 and West Highland Road.
The project is expected to cost about $10 million. University officials hope to begin construction this spring to complete the project in time for the start of the 2012-13 school year, said Patrick Ferry, president of Concordia University Wisconsin.
Milwaukee-based Zimmerman Architectural Studios Inc. is doing the design work for the project. Concordia is in the process of selecting a general contractor for the project.
Concordia University Wisconsin has grown significantly in recent years and now has 7,600 students, most of which attend school at the Mequon campus. The Mequon campus has about 1,400 undergraduate students who live on campus.
The university’s growth has been so significant that it now has a shortage of parking, Ferry said. The university has a temporary parking lot on the south side of its campus that it is required by the city to eventually cease use of.
“Parking has been a very significant challenge for us with our growth in the last few years,” Ferry said.
Concordia still has not selected an exact location for the structure, but it is considering sites on the west side of the campus, where much of its parking spaces are already located. The parking structure probably will not replace an existing parking lot, Ferry said.
The parking structure will be used by students who live on campus, Ferry said. That will free up more surface parking spaces for commuter students and faculty.
