Chrysler’s Kenosha plant will close in October

About 575 employees will lose their jobs when Chrysler Group LLC closes its Kenosha engine plant in October, the company said today in a notification that it sent to the state Department of Workforce Development.

The company said previously that the Kenosha plant would close by the end of the year. The company has made several rounds of contract buyouts and early retirements there – the plant had about 700 employees last fall.

The Kenosha plant currently produces the 2.7L V6 and 3.5L V6 gasoline engines used in several of the company’s vehicles.

Selected assets of Chrysler were acquired last year by Italy-based Fiat SpA, after Chrysler entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy. But Fiat did not acquire the Kenosha plant.

The union employees at the Kenosha plant are represented the United Auto Workers, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Workers of America and The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
