Chicago to get George Lucas Museum

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art issued a press release saying it intends to join Chicago’s “vibrant cultural arts” scene by locating on the city’s Museum Campus — hopefully by 2018.

“We are honored to be partnering with the city of Chicago and the many cultural, educational and community groups that have come forward with ideas about how the (museum) will add to their work,” George Lucas said in the release. “I am humbled to be joining with such an extraordinary museum community.”

Mayor Rahm Emanuel was equally effusive.

“Like Marshall Field, John G. Shedd and Max Adler before him, George’s philanthropy will inspire and educate for generations,”the Mayor said in the same release. “George Lucas has revolutionized the art of storytelling over the last four decades and we are honored to be the recipient of this incredible legacy investment.”

Mr. Lucas is offering only limited details on why he picked Chicago over the City by the Bay, saying that the “quality” of the Chicago site offers “unparalleled visitor access.”
