Cardinal Stritch drops plans to buy Wisconsin Energy Corp. land in St. Francis

Cardinal Stritch University announced recently that it has decided not to purchase 90 acres of land owned by Wisconsin Energy Corp. near the Cousins Center property that the university planned to purchase from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

"As it gathered more information about the We Energies land, the university decided against purchasing the property because of the downturn in the economy," the university said in a news release. "Discussions on purchasing the Cousins Center without the We Energies property will continue. However, the entire economic atmosphere that supported the initial offer has changed and Stritch officials must take that into consideration."

The Wisconsin Energy land was going to be used by the university for athletic fields. The university says it will now look at other sites and facilities in St. Francis and the south shore area as possible athletic venues for its sports teams and recreational sites for students.

The university is moving forward with its plans to occupy a three-story building in the former Pabst brewery complex in downtown Milwaukee. The building will be used for classrooms, offices and meeting space for the College of Education and Leadership and other programs. The building will open in May. The building that currently houses the College of Education and Leadership on the Fox Point/Glendale campus will be remodeled this summer into a residence hall for 90 students.
