Can I have this dance?

Organizations:

The good ones make it look effortless and easy, don’t they? I’m talking about dancers. The ones who move with a grace that can only come with hours and hours of practice when they repeatedly fall down and get back up again until they get to this point of ease.

As business leaders, we can learn a lot from them. After all, social media, email, and SMS programs are a dance, in their own right. You must know the right steps because the last thing you want to do is to step on the toes of your followers and subscribers. However, just because you learn the choreographed moves, it doesn’t make you a dancer.

What separates the average dancer from a great dancer is the chemistry with your partner. It’s that knowledge with feeling, which when brought together, makes the moves feel fluid and natural.

In social media, you can learn the best practice steps, but if you blindly follow those without regard to who really follows you, you’ll come off as stiff and unnatural. Who wants a dance partner like that? Unsubscribe!

Spend time with your followers. Listen to them, observe them, get to know them. When are they most active – morning, afternoon, or evening? How often do they feel comfortable hearing from you? Don’t overwhelm them with correspondence. They follow or subscribe, but why? Do they hope to get deals, tips, a chuckle – or all of the above? Facebook dancers are different from Twitter dancers, who are different from newsletter and SMS dancers.

Establish some chemistry, perfect those steps, and in no time, you and your partners will be tearing up the social media dance floor.
