Hundreds of local businesses, schools, medical clinics and other public facilities were closed today, as the Milwaukee region awakened to temperatures as low as 18 degrees below zero and wind chills down to 50 below.
Milwaukee Public Schools were closed today and announced they also will be closed Tuesday. Most other school districts also are likely to be closed Tuesday.
Some Milwaukee County Transit System bus routes were suspended today.
According to a phone recording at Milwaukee’s Department of Public Works:
“Due to extreme weather conditions, city offices are closed (and) garbage and recycling will not be collected today. Night parking will not be enforced tonight, Monday, Jan 6. However, vehicles must be legally parked and not in violation of any posted parking regulations. Night parking permissions will resume on Tuesday morning, Jan. 7.”
Roundy’s Inc. announced that all of its Pick ‘n Save stores will be closed at 8 p.m. to protect its employees and its customers.
Hundreds of businesses announced they were closed through www.wisn.com, a media partner of BizTimes. The National Weather Service has extended its severe wind chill warning through noon on Tuesday. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to have a plan, including a charged cell phone, when heading out in the extreme temperatures.
