Milwaukee Brewers players are taking time off the field today to complete a rainwater harvesting pavilion at the Guest House of Milwaukee, a new feature made possible by a charitable gift from the Brewers Community Foundation.
The foundation represents the philanthropic arm of the baseball team.
The pavilion will collect rainwater, direct it away from sewers and store it to be used in the homeless shelter’s nearby Cream City Gardens. Along with helping maintain the gardens, the pavilion will act as a gathering place for the neighborhood community.
“We’re very grateful for the generosity of the Brewers Community Foundation and the many community partners involved in making this project happen,” said Cindy Krahenbuhl, executive director of the Guest House of Milwaukee. “The rainwater harvesting pavilion will provide a space for neighbors to gather, formerly homeless individuals to learn about urban agriculture, and benefits our urban environment by recycling rainwater. Our other projects, including the painted benches, will beautify our often overlooked neighborhood as well.”
In addition to Brewers players, onsite volunteers assisting with the pavilion will include shelter guests and staff members as well as representatives from United Way, Milwaukee-based Rockwell Automation, Friedens Community Ministries, VetterDenk Architects, Orta Construction, Reflo Sustainable Water Solutions, Arts@Large, and Picnic Tables by Ray.
Area artists will also contribute to the completion of the pavilion.
