This year’s Milwaukee “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Walk, held on May 4 at Veterans Park, raised $500,000 toward “the fight against breast cancer” through the generosity of more than 7,000 walkers.
The walk, driven by the American Cancer Society in more than 270 communities across the country, builds awareness around breast cancer statistics, risk, prevention measures and treatment information and promotes continued research of the disease.
“‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ unites us all to walk together as the most powerful force to end breast cancer,” said Shari Henning, senior vice president of American Cancer Society. “We are so thankful to presenting sponsor Kohl’s Cares and the thousands of Making Strides walkers and supporters who are helping our efforts to finish the fight and make this cancer’s last century.”
Kohl’s also represented the largest corporate team of the Milwaukee event with more than 2,200 associates, friends and family members taking part.
“Kohl’s is proud to have served as the presenting sponsor of the 2013 ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ Walk in Milwaukee as we continue our partnership with the American Cancer Society, which helps provide valuable information and resources to local women battling breast cancer,” said Kevin Mansell, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Kohl’s. “We know breast cancer has impacted thousands of families across the state and as a company, we are passionate about making a true difference in the fight against breast cancer and providing support to those when they need it most.”
To emphasize the gravity of the disease, Kohl’s created a visual representation of the nearly 4,500 Wisconsin women estimated to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The visual was composed of 4,490 pink cutout figures displayed on the south lawn of the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Throughout nearly the past three years, Kohl’s has contributed almost $5 million to the American Cancer Society to advance initiatives supporting women impacted by breast cancer in the state.
