Board overrides Walker vetoes

The Milwaukee County Board’s overrides of 11 vetoes issued by County Executive Scott Walker puts the tax levy at $269.6 million, an increase of about 2.4 percent over the 2010 levy. As a result, the county tax bill on the average home will rise $7.49 from 2010.
The budget Walker introduced included a proposed $1 million cut to the levy, and he said his vetoes were meant to pare back spending the board added during its consideration of the budget.
Among the provisions overridden were wage and benefit modifications. The overrides give county workers a net 2 percent salary decrease due to a 4 percent pension contribution from non-represented employees next year.
The board’s veto override votes also restored funding for the contingency fund, universal screening, the farm and fish hatchery, the relocation study for South Shore Beach and the refurbishment of Moody Pool in Milwaukee. The veto of a possible separate property tax line item for parks, recreation and culture was also overridden.
Ahead of the vote, the CRG Network announced it is helping a group of citizens that formed a PAC to support a possible recall of Supervisor Marina Dimitrijevic if she voted to override any of Walker’s spending vetoes. She voted to uphold just one of Walker’s 15 vetoes.
Dimitrijevic has been mentioned as a candidate to replace Walker once he resigns his post to become governor.
