BizTimes wins national awards for Editorial Excellence

BizTimes Milwaukee won three national awards for Editorial Excellence at the Alliance of Area Business Publishers Summer Conference in Charlotte, N.C., over the weekend.

“The purpose of the Alliance competition is to encourage a high level of journalistic performance and service to communities by recognizing editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in regional business publications,” said Alliance executive director C. James Dowden.

BizTimes Milwaukee magazine, led by graphic artists Shelly Tabor and Alex Schneider, won a silver award for best overall design. Editorial content was produced by executive editor Steve Jagler, managing editor Andrew Weiland, associate editor Molly Dill and reporters Erica Breunlin and Hilary Dickinson. The contest judges from the University of Missouri School of Journalism commented, “The covers have impact and are inviting. Inside, the cover stories are generously presented with visuals and supplements. The packaging is clean and includes informative artwork. Editors exhibit a smart use of color and typography, as portrayed in the front-of-book Leading Edge and its Coffee Break and Political Beat, a strong table of contents, and a variety of pullouts and subheads throughout the issue.”

BizTimes Milwaukee also won a silver award for best front page for a cover story headlined, “Generational turning point for women to get on board,” which chronicled the progress of placing women on corporate boards. The page was designed by Tabor. The judges commented, “The portrait on this cover was well-executed with dramatic studio lighting that emphasizes the woman among men. The red color was used both subtly and in a sophisticated manner to draw the eye around the page. Lots of restraint used with this cover so that it wasn’t overdone or hyperbolic.”

Breunlin won a bronze award for best explanatory journalism for her cover story headlined, “Generational turning point for women to get on board.” The judges commented, “Kudos to the reporter for identifying a historic opportunity to get women onto the boards of more public companies in the state. The article helps shed light on how Wisconsin fits into national trends. Statistics help bolster the story, while experts help show why gender diversity is important.”

Earlier this year, Jagler received a bronze award for Editorial Excellence from the Milwaukee Press Club for best column, and Weiland received a bronze award from the club for best beat coverage.
