BizTimes Milwaukee won a silver award of excellence for “Best of Show” as one of the best local business publications in the nation from the Alliance of Area Business Publications (AABP) Saturday night.

The judges of the contest, who are members of the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, said the following about BizTimes: “Informative, even offbeat, content, uncluttered design and knowledgeable columnists are hallmarks of this publication. The variety of content in the publication is impressive, acknowledging the wide band of interests within its audience, from politics to nonprofits, innovations, real estate, wealth management and Dispatches from China. Features, such as a timely report on soldiers returning to the 16 workforce, are thoughtful and engaging. There is also plenty of voice in the well-edited columns, as well as sound advice.”
In particular, the judges saluted a BizTimes cover story about employers who are hiring veterans returning to the workforce.
BizTimes competed in the “Best Newspaper: Small Tabloids” division. The gold award of excellence in the division went to the Baton Rouge Business Report. The “Best Newspaper: Large Tabloids” gold award went to Crain’s New York Business. “Best Magazine” went to Business North Carolina.
BizTimes received the AABP’s gold award for excellence in 2010.
The BizTimes editorial team includes executive editor Steve Jagler, managing editor Andrew Weiland and reporters Alysha Schertz and Molly Newman.
“To compete and win awards in the best of show competition of the AABP is a tribute to our entire staff,” said Dan Meyer, publisher of BizTimes.
“The purpose of the Alliance competition is to encourage a high level of journalistic performance and service to communities by recognizing editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in regional business publications,” said AABP executive director C. James Dowden.
BizTimes hosted the AABP Summer Conference last weekend at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. The organization presented 108 awards to newspaper and magazine business periodicals.
