Minority business awards

The state Department of Commerce recently announced the 2009 winners of the Marketplace special business awards. The awards showcase the achievements of minority businesses in Wisconsin. Outstanding Business for a large company: Mantz Automation, Hartford; Outstanding Business for a small company- HiTech Integrated Solutions, Milwaukee; and the Good Citizen award which recognizes a company that contributes generously to its community, the law firm of Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan, Milwaukee.

Ebenezer Child Care Center

Ebenezer Child Care Centers, Milwaukee announced that it has purchased Kid’s Kingdom Learning Center, 10333 N. Enterprise Drive on the corner of 66th (Enterprise) and Donges Bay Road in Mequon. The center, which has been in operation since 1994, was owned by Tom and Karen Koch-Hodgert. In 2004, Ebenezer Child Care Centers opened a facility in Oak Creek. The agency also has locations in downtown Milwaukee, Milwaukee’s south side, the Milwaukee County Research Park in Wauwatosa, in Greenfield’s Public Elementary Schools and MPS’s Lady Pitts School. The center will offer quality care for children four weeks through 12 years of age Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center will also provide a summer program and before and after school care for school age children. MRPC

MRPC, a single-source provider of medical device components and assemblies, announced that it has received ISO 13485 certification. The certification covers all disciplines within the company. MRPC is also ISO 9001 certified. The certificate indicates that MRPC has successfully implemented a quality management system that matches the worldwide quality management system standard for medical devices. It demonstrates MRPC’s ability to provide medical devices and related services that consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements. ISO 13485 is an International Organization for Standardization (IS0) standard that focuses on the requirements for companies involved in the development of medical devices. Manufacturers must demonstrate that quality management systems are implemented and maintained to receive the certification, which addresses such quality issues as risk management, sterilization and traceability.


The Falk Group

The Reginald Baylor Studio, Milwaukee, announced it has appointed The Falk Group PR to help the studio generate national attention for artist Reginald Baylor’s original acrylic-on-canvas pieces, the studio’s mixed medium limited edition print series and its new coloring book which features Baylor’s work. The Reginald Baylor Studio is also striving to increase national awareness of social and cultural creative collaborations that are taking place in Milwaukee’s arts and culture scene. Reginald Baylor, who historically has worked with large acrylic pieces on canvas, has recently begun focusing on limited edition prints, which are more accessible for the general public, due to their affordability. Baylor’s original pieces sell for $10,000-$40,000 per painting. His limited edition original prints sell between $500-$5,000 per print. Baylor has been working from his studio in the Third Ward of Milwaukee since 2005. This past year, he began working and selling his pieces from a second studio, this one located within the Pfister Hotel. In addition, his work will be on display at West Bend Mutual Insurance Company, which this past week secured a piece for its headquarters. 


Potawatomi Bingo Casino

Potawatomi Bingo Casino was awarded an Indoor Air Quality Award from the National Air Filtration Association. These efforts have included installation of state-of-the-art air monitoring and filtration equipment. Air quality is further enhanced through the use scenting equipment in many areas of the casino.

Indoor Air Quality Award recipients are chosen through a multi-step review and judging process. NAFA staff conducts an initial administrative review of all applications to ensure adherence to the entry requirements.


Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin

Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin SpineCare Clinic, a multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating spine patients, has opened at the Community Memorial Medical Commons in Menomonee Falls. SpineCare is an outpatient program that provides individualized, exercise-based care for people with musculoskeletal spine disorders. The program’s team includes orthopedic and neurosurgeons, physical medicine specialists, chiropractic physicians, nurses and physical and occupational therapists.


Carroll University

Carroll University, Waukesha, has received a $189,719 two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support the University’s International Business Initiative. The project will enhance international business curriculum for about 400 undergraduate business majors and another 600 non majors taking business courses. The funds will be used to: Support faculty in the Business, Accounting and Economics Department as they work to internationalize curricula; increase international experiences for students; enhance international partnerships and global education; and allow Carroll to enhance its cooperation, outreach and alliances with Wisconsin companies and community partner organizations. Carroll is working on this project with the Waukesha County Chamber of Commerce, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, the Carroll University Center for Leadership Excellence, and international educational partners. Carroll will provide a dollar for dollar match to the project.


DUCTZ

DUCTZ, a restoration company dedicated to the cleaning of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and duct work, announced that its newest DUCTZ franchise location opened in Brookfield. The new location, 1193 Dorchester Dr. is owned by local entrepreneur Fred Hallett. DUCTZ is Energy Star approved, meeting the strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. DUCTZ owners and their employees go through extensive training and certification programs approved by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). Upon completion, they are considered professionals in the business and will be recognized as an Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS), a certification given by NADCA to trained and qualified professionals that ensures that all cleaning is performed in accordance with NADCA standards and guidelines.
