FloorCo
FloorCo, a direct-to-the-trade flooring wholesaler with a 7,500-square-foot showroom in West Allis, was recently awarded the 2008 Distributor of the Year national achievement award presented by National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). The award recognizes distributors who have demonstrated a strong commitment to NARI, the professional remodeling industry, and the communities in which they do business. FloorCo, a member of the Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council, Inc., was nominated for the national award by Milwaukee/NARI after receiving the local chapter’s 2008 Distributor of the Year Award earlier this year.
C2 Graphics
C2 Graphics, Milwaukee, recently earned its certification as a Woman-owned business enterprise through the Wisconsin Department of Commerce. C2 met the state administrative rule requirements of being at least 51 percent of woman-owned, controlled and managed and will be considered for contracts with government entities and corporations that seek vendor relationships with businesses owned and operated by women. The company is co-owned by Erica Conway, who says the certification is valid for three years with a one year renewal review. There are approximately 104 companies in Milwaukee County with this certification.
Medical College of Wisconsin
The Medical College of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa, recently received a four-year, $1,413,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to develop new drug treatments for cardiac disease prevention. Dr. David Stowe, professor of anesthesiology and physiology, is the principal investigator for the grant. He will study the role that chemical regulator ions play in helping the mitochondria, the energy-generating components of cells, produce ATP, or the energy currency of the cell. MCW also received a three-year, $97,458 grant from National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center to understand the role that cholesterol plays in eye lenses that are healthy and eye lenses with cataract development, a disorder that causes the eye lens to become opaque, decreases vision, and may eventually cause blindness if untreated. Witold Subczynski, assistant professor of biophysics, is principal investigator for this grant.
Froedtert and Community Health
Froedtert & Community Health, Milwaukee, recently became the second hospital organization in the nation and the first in the Midwest to join a new network, called Care Everywhere, that lets separate health care entities share medical records. In addition to Froedtert Hospital and Community Memorial Hospital, Froedtert & Community Health members St. Joseph’s Hospital and the West Bend Clinic also can now use Care Everywhere to electronically send and receive medical information over the Internet in seconds, giving physicians the information they need to immediately begin treating a patient. As more West Bend residents see Medical College of Wisconsin physicians, Care Everywhere will help facilitate high-quality, cost-effective care.
Marquette University
Marquette University’s College of Professional Studies has made its Graduate Certificate in Leadership Studies program fully available online. Students may enroll now for the fall 2009 semester. The college will continue to offer its on-campus/online hybrid certificate option. Certificate students will be required to complete five leadership courses (15 graduate credits) over a period of 18 months. There will be one course during the fall 2009 semester, and then two courses during each of the following two semesters. Applicants are required to have a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. They must complete an application form, submit transcripts from all previous and current universities, and provide three letters of recommendation. R.A. Smith National Inc.
R.A. Smith National, Brookfield, recently announced that it will be providing design services to the Grafton Little League Association for a 20-acre sports facility to be constructed at the northeast corner of Lakefield Road and Riverbend Road in the Village of Grafton. The Grafton Little League sports facility is planned to include six baseball diamonds, a playground and parking for 300 cars. R.A. Smith National will provide design services for the ball field, playground and parking lot, as well as grading design, stormwater management, landscape architecture and irrigation design, and lighting design.
Phones Plus
Phones Plus, New Berlin, a unified communications provider, recently received the “Excellence in Sales Performance” award from Technology Assurance Group, an international organization of independently owned unified communications companies in the United States and Canada. Phones Plus was highlighted as a premier provider. The awards are given out annually, and are based on overall financial performance, customer satisfaction, and the ability to provide customers with cost effective unified communication solutions.
PKA Marketing
Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, recently selected PKA Marketing as its agency of record. The Mequon-based agency will be tasked with developing and executing strategic marketing plans for the university’s diverse business units. PKA will continue to work with the university’s marketing department to support its efforts in undergraduate, graduate and adult education admissions, university relations, and advancement. The agency will also be tapped for marketing specialized areas such as the School of Pharmacy, School of Business and Legal Studies and the Center for Environmental Stewardship.
HK Systems Inc.,
HK Systems, New Berlin, recently introduced “Automate the Conventional,” a unique and affordable automated solution for the conventional warehouse. Specifically designed to lower operating costs, increase inventory accuracy, and reduce product and facility damage, the “Automate the Conventional” solution replaces lift trucks with HK Systems’ Fork Style Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) to improve operational performance and increase efficiencies. The Automate the Conventional AGVs can interface with existing material handling equipment and technology and also work in conjunction with manual lift trucks. Diversified load handling capability is possible with the use of attachments including fork positioners, double pallet handlers, clamps, and rotating forks. In addition, the traffic management software allows each AGV to follow the most efficient path and handle loads without facility or product damage.
