Medical College of Wisconsin

The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $2.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Md., to study the biological processes of photopigment genes in the cone photoreceptor cells of the eye. The grant is from the NIH National Eye Institute. Jay Neitz, professor of cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy and the R.D. & Linda Peters Professor in Ophthalmology endowed chair is principal investigator for the grant.

The Medical College also received a four-year, $1.12 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Bethesda, to develop an integrative genomics approach to the genetic study of type 1 diabetes. Xujing Wang, associate professor of pediatrics, is principal investigator of the study, which is a collaboration with Children’s Research Institute, Washington, D.C.; the Medical College’s Human and Molecular Genetics Center; and the Max McGee National Research Center for Juvenile Diabetes of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa. Co-investigators on the study include: Dr. Soumitra Ghosh, associate professor of pediatrics and director of the Max McGee National Research Center for Juvenile Diabetes; Martin Hessner, associate professor of pediatrics; and Tao Wang, assistant professor of biostatistics.


Brady Corporation Foundation

Brady Corporation Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Brady Corp., Milwaukee, awarded a three-year, $130,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs and the Boys & Girls Clubs, Milwaukee; a three-year, $75,000 grant to Center for Teaching Entrepreneurship (CTE), Milwaukee; and a three-year, $85,000 grant to Cardinal Stritch University’s Integrated Leadership Program, Fox Point. The gift to the Boys & Girls Clubs will help fund the SPARK early literacy program at the Daniels/Mardak branch, Milwaukee. The gift to CTE will help fund the Your Life is Your Business program and the We Are Girl Entrepreneurs program. The gift to Cardinal Stritch University’s Integrated Leadership Program will be used for ongoing program evaluation and practicum outreach. The grant will also provide partial scholarships for students taking the organizational leadership course and leadership practicum as part of earning a minor in leadership.


Milwaukee Mile

Milwaukee Mile, West Allis, extended an agreement with Event Merchandising Inc. (EMI), Memphis, Tenn., to be the official merchandiser through the 2012 season. Milwaukee Mile has partnered with EMI since 2006.


HeartMatters.MD, LLC

Dr. Bruce Wilson, a cardiologist, launched HeartMatters.MD, LLC, an educational company that focuses on HeartMath principles, located at 1330 W. Towne Square Road in Mequon. Wilson will serve as president and chief executive officer of the company. HeartMath principles explain the communication between the human heart and brain to promote a decrease in stress and an increase in health. Wilson has served as the medical director of HeartMath LLC, Boulder Creek, Calif. since 2001, and used HeartMath to aid employers in increasing employee job and customer satisfaction. Wilson wrote the book, “The HeartMath Approach to Managing Hypertension” this year, published by New Harbinger Publications, Oakland, Calif. Scheibel Halaska

Scheibel Halaska received two 2007 American Graphic Design Awards from Graphic Design USA magazine, New York, N.Y. Scheibel Halaska, a leading integrated marketing and communications firm, received the awards for its work on Derse, Inc.’s Website and corporate identity. The firm’s design work was chosen from over 10,000-plus entries. 

 

Eagle Technology, Inc

Eagle Technology, Inc., Mequon, released ProTeus V 9.6.4, a WindowsR Vista compliant maintenance management software solution. The version supports SQL Server, SQL Express, and Oracle databases. ProTeus provides integration of maintenance management and building systems for intelligent buildings and facilities. For facilities, ProTeus offers the PM task module, a preventative maintenance tasking database tool, as well as ProLink II. Also, ProTeus is currently the only software solution to seamlessly interface with Building Automation Systems (BAS) from Trane, Johnson Controls, Tridium, Delta Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Carrier, and others. In the Manufacturing environment, ProTeus offers Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) capability. Eagle Technology has been in business 20 years.

DBA Marketing Communications

DBA Marketing Communications, Delafield, received an American Graphic Design Award from the Graphic Design USA Awards competition. DBA Marketing, which specialized in business-to-business and consumer marketing communications, received the award for its work on a series of three print advertisements for Wixon Inc. St. Francis.  Graphic Design USA is a nationally renowned print magazine distributed among industry professionals. Each year the publication holds an awards competition to recognize superior design and communications. 

UW-Whitewater

Professor Marcia James received the Russell J. Hosler Award in Business Education from the

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s College of Business and Economics.

For more than 20 years, James has been an avid proponent of improving business education, all while remaining true to instructing business education students in the classroom.  Since joining the business education faculty in 1986 to teach office management courses, James played a key role in transforming the program to the computer end user technologies major. She employed her expertise in international studies to better serve her students in the classroom with respect to diversity. The Russell J. Hosler Award stimulates, encourages and rewards faculty members who contribute to the development and advancement of business education. The award is made possible by Hosler’s wife, Professor Emeritus Mary Margaret Hosler, who received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at UW-Whitewater.
