Gilbane Building Co.
The Milwaukee office of Gilbane Building Co., Providence, R.I., helped raise more than $55,000 for the Medical College of Wisconsin to conduct cancer research at the first annual Bill Stone Golf Classic, held in September at the Blue Mound Golf and Country Club, Wauwatosa. The event was held to remember Gilbane employee Bill Stone, who lost his battle to cancer in April.
Milwaukee Downtown, Business Improvement District (BID) No. 21
Milwaukee Downtown, Business Improvement District (BID) #21 received an Outstanding Achievement Award in Special Events and Promotions for Downtown Employee Appreciation Week from the International Downtown Association (IDA), Washington, D.C. Milwaukee Downtown launched Employee Appreciation Week in 2006 to celebrate the individuals and businesses in downtown Milwaukee, with special events, office challenge games, musical competitions and discounts at local businesses.
Medical College of Wisconsin
Owen Griffith was named dean of the Medical College of Wisconsin Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Griffith has served as interim dean since July. Griffith joined the Medical College in 1992 as chairman and professor of biochemistry. He is co-founder of ArgiNOx Pharmaceuticals Inc., Redwood City, Calif., is inventor or co-inventor of 41 U.S. patents and has written more than 150 research publications, most of which deal with nitric oxide metabolism.
The Medical College received a five-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Bethesda, Md., to study the injection of toxins into epithelial cells by a bacterial pathogen. Dara Frank, professor of microbiology and molecular genetics and director of the Medical College’s Center for Biopreparedness and Infectious Diseases, will serve as principal investigator for the grant.
The Medical College also received a four-year, $1.6 million grant from the NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to investigate injury to cells and tissues in different organ systems that may result from chronic sleep restriction. Carol Everson, professor of neurology, is principal investigator for the grant, entitled Oxidative Stress Responses to Loss and Recovery of Sleep.
The Medical College recognized Dr. Elizabeth Jacobs and Michele Battle with Women Pioneers in Research Awards. Jacobs serves as a professor of medicine and physiology and chief of the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine for the Medical College. Battle serves as a postdoctoral fellow in the department of cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy at the Medical College. Jacobs will receive a $10,000 research award and Battle will receive the $1,000 Edward J. Lennon, M.D. Award for Outstanding Woman Postdoctoral Researcher.

Diversified Insurance Services Inc.
Dean Hoffman, director at large for group services at Diversified Insurance Services Inc., Waukesha, received the 2007 Robert C. Gilray Distinguished Service Award from the Wisconsin Association of Health Underwriters (WAHU), Madison. Hoffman served as president of WAHU in 2004 and currently serves on the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU), Arlington, Va., Region IV board of directors and the NAHU board of directors.
Waukesha-Ozaukee-Washington County Workforce Development Board
The Waukesha-Ozaukee-Washington (W-O-W) County Workforce Development Board, Pewaukee, recognized ProHealth Care, Waukesha, with the Employer of the Year award. The annual Employer of the Year award is given to a business in the three-county area that has met and exceeded the Workforce Development Board criteria in categories including: leadership; the business’ relationship with Workforce Development Centers; workforce development practices; community involvement; effective use of community resources; number of new hires; and training and innovation in hiring, training, and retention.

Morris Midwest, Milwaukee and Hoffman Estates, Ill., a division of Morris Group Inc., Windsor, Conn., was selected by KGK International Corp., Buffalo Grove, as the exclusive representative for eastern Wisconsin, northern Illinois and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for select Niwa-gun Japan-based Okuma Corp. machine tools equipped with controls developed by Japan-based FANUC. Okuma manufactures metal cutting machinery, including horizontal and vertical machining centers, vertical turning centers and multi-spindle production machinery, profiling machines and production centers with combined technologies. KGK International is the exclusive North American distributor for select Okuma machinery equipped with the FANUC control.
Dr. Alexander A. Romashko, M.D.
Dr. Alexander Romashko opened a private practice in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery in two locations. Romashko will practice in Wauwatosa from St. Joseph Outpatient Center and in Waukesha from the Waukesha Memorial Hospital Professional Building. Romashko holds a medical degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He serves as a clinical lecturer for family practice residents at the Medical College of Wisconsin and transitional year residents at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Romashko retained Pinnacle XL, Milwaukee, for strategic marketing services. Pinnacle XL will provide Web site development and maintenance; media relations; advertising; Pinnacle’s XSell integrated marketing and sales program; and Email marketing.
