UW-Parkside/ Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation Inc.

UW-Parkside/ Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation (CATI) Inc., received honorable mention in the Technology-Based Economic Development category for population of 50,000 to 200,000 as part of the awards program held by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), Washington, D.C. UW-Parkside/CATI was recognized for inovaDrive, a technology-based economic development strategy designed to identify and meet the technology needs of small and mid-sized manufacturing operations in southeastern Wisconsin. InovaDrive enables UW-Parkside/CATI to identify new product development opportunities or higher value-added markets to increase margins and provide a stronger market position in relationship to global competition. Other Wisconsin winners included Milwaukee 7, Milwaukee, which was the category winner in the Promotional Awards category for its Web site, www.choosemilwaukee.com; Downtown Eau Claire Inc., Eau Claire, which received honorable mention in the Promotional Awards category for its IDEA Lounge Series; and the Kenosha Area Business Alliance, Kenosha, which received honorable mention in the Promotional Awards category for its 2006 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Report.

Medical College of Wisconsin

The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $418,120 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Md., to fund a 12-week summer research training program introducing 10 medical students per year to the injury control field. The grant is entitled Medical Student Training in Aging and Injury Research. The grant is from the NIH National Institute on Aging. Dr. Linda Meurer, associate professor of family medicine, is principal investigator for the grant.

Moy Creative

Lisa Moy of Moy Creative, Milwaukee, was hired by ALD/ Societe Generale, France, to design and launch its brand presence in the U.S. ALD Automotive USA, Madison, is a full-service commercial leasing and fleet management company that provides vehicle leasing, fleet management and professional consulting.

Quarles & Brady LLP

Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee, was selected by Yale Law Women, an organization affiliated with Yale University, as the nation’s No. 1 law firm for family-friendly policies. The ranking was part of the annual top 10 most family-friendly law firms program. Firms were judged using criteria based on weeks of maternity and paternity leave available and whether the time was actually used by attorneys in the past year; compensation policies relating to alternative schedules; and whether attorneys working alternative schedules have made partner. Seventeen attorneys at Quarles & Brady are currently taking advantage of its flex-time program, including two who became partners this year. The flexible schedule program allows the attorney to designate a percentage commitment to the firm, usually at least a 60 percent commitment, and to work a reduced schedule that meets the needs of the attorney and the firm’s clients.

Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee

The Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee, Milwaukee, secured a $125,000 matching grant from the Cultures of Giving Fund, established at the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, N.Y., with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Battle Creek, Mich. The grant will match donors’ gifts to the Women’s Fund to endow and support grants to social change programs serving minority women and girls through component donor funds, including: the African American Women’s Fund Project, Latinas en Acción and the Lesbian Fund. Each fund is challenged to raise up to $30,000 in matching contributions from individual donors over the next two years.

Milwaukee Public Library Foundation

The Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Milwaukee, recognized Edward Zore, president and chief executive officer of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., Milwaukee, with the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Award. The award is presented annually to an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to libraries, literacy and lifelong learning in the community.

R.A. Smith & Associates, Inc.

John Bruggeman, a transportation engineer for R.A. Smith & Associates, Inc., Brookfield, received the $1,500 Harvey Shebesta Scholarship sponsored by the Wisconsin Section of Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Washington, D.C. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student in a Wisconsin university and is determined by an individual’s scholastic performance, career goals, academic and professional activities and record of leadership. Bruggeman is pursuing his master’s degree in civil engineering and urban planning from UW-Milwaukee.

Encompass Medical Transcription Inc.

Encompass Medical Transcription Inc., Waukesha, was ranked No. 1 in the 2007 Medical Transcription Service Organization (MTSO) study, performed by KLAS Enterprises LLC, Orem, Utah. The 2007 survey collected data regarding the specific standards and ideals from outsourced medical transcription service organizations. The evaluations were completed by study participants made up of health care directors and managers. Encompass had an overall score of 88.3 out of 100, ranking the company at No. 1. Encompass also received four perfect scores of 100 percent in four major business indicator categories. Twelve other national medical transcription companies participated in the survey.
