Medical College of Wisconsin
The Medical College of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa, will host the 8th World Congress for Microcirculation, Aug. 15-19, at the Midwest Airlines Center, Milwaukee. The Medical College is hosting the event in conjunction with The Microcirculatory Society Inc. Julian Lombard, professor of physiology at the Medical College, will serve as chair of the planning committee. The event will mark the first time since 1991 that the congress, which occurs at four-to-five-year intervals, is being held in the U.S.  It is expected to draw 1,200 biomedical researchers and exhibitors.

Schenck Business Solutions
Schenck Business Solutions, Appleton, and its partners donated $75,000 to UW-Whitewater in support of student scholarships and the College of Business and Economics Timothy J. Hyland Hall. Bill Goodman, president of Schenck Business Solutions, is a graduate of UW-Whitewater and currently sits on the department of accounting advisory board. Kermit Ellefson, Schenck’s immediate-past president, is also a graduate and currently serves on the UW-Whitewater Foundation board. The $41 million Timothy J. Hyland Hall will be completed by fall 2009. The building will include a state-of-the-art trading room, 38 hi-tech classrooms, a 400-seat auditorium, two 150-seat lecture halls, five computer labs, a center for entrepreneurial development, a global research center, a fiscal economic research center and an international studies room.

International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans
The International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, Brookfield, launched Benefits and Compensation Books, a catalog of more than 150 employee benefits and compensation resources.
The catalog provides quick access to the expanded library of resources available through the International Foundation including books, periodicals, survey results, CDs and DVDs. Topics discussed include: research studies; general benefits; health care; pension and retirement plans; multiemployer plans; public employee plans; retirement planning; compensation and human resources; career development and global topics.

Community Memorial Hospital
Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls, started renovations to its mental health unit that will result in state-of-the-art safety features and private rooms for all of its patients. The renovation project was designed by Milwaukee-based Plunkett Raysich Architects and will be completed by this fall. Each private room will have its own bathroom. Safety features include: showerheads and other bathroom apparatus recessed into the wall; artwork digitally embedded in the wall to avoid sharp edges; unbreakable windows and doors designed on a slant so that nothing can be hung over them. The unit also will have two rooms for group therapy and a space for doctors, nurses, social workers, psychiatric technicians and occupational therapists to treat patients.

Fi-Med Management Inc.
Adrian Velasquez, president, and Christine Krause, vice president of Fi-Med Management Inc., Milwaukee, received the Wisconsin Small Business Persons of the Year Award for 2007 from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Fi-Med offers consulting, accounts receivable management, cash management, lock box services and educational services to medical practices at a national level. Fi-Med Management was judged on its staying power, growth in number of employees, increase in sales, current and past financial reports, innovativeness of product or service offered, response to adversity and contributions to aid community-oriented projects. Velasquez and Krause are among 53 top small business persons, one from each state in the U.S. plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands, and Guam. As Wisconsin Small Business Person of the Year Award winners, Velasquez and Krause are in the running for the National Small Business Person of the Year Award.

Columbia St. Mary’s

Columbia St. Mary’s will open a Sleep Center and Wound Healing Center in Mequon this spring. The Sleep Center, the Wound Healing Center, plus adult and pediatric rehabilitation will be located in the Lakeside Commons North Building at 11725 N. Port Washington Road. The Lakeside Commons North Building is 15,000 square-feet and was designed by Lakeside Development Co., Mequon.

Small Business Administration
The Wisconsin district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Milwaukee, awarded local companies with Small Business Advocates of the Year awards. John Monnett, Jr., president, Betty Monnett, chief financial officer and Jeremy Monnett, chief executive officer of Sonex Aircraft LLC, Oshkosh, received honorable mention for the Small Business Persons of the Year Award. Gene Anguil, president of Anguil Environmental Systems Inc., Milwaukee, was the state and regional winner of the Small Business Exporter Award. Jeffrey and Norbert Dretzkab, co-owners of Underground Pipeline Inc., New Berlin, received the Minority Small Business Persons of the Year Award. James Freeman, president of Helicopter Specialties Inc., Janesville, received the emerging Small Business Person Award. Nelson Soler, president of Latino Entrepreneurial Network, Milwaukee, received the Minority Small Business Champion Award. Barbara Ecklond of Suby Von Haden & Associates S.C., Brookfield, received the Financial Services Champion Award. Renee Walz of Western Dairyland, Independence, received the Women in Business Champion Award. Jody Glynn Patrick, vice president, publisher and radio journalist for In Business Magazine, Monona, received the Small Business Journalist Award. Meghan Shannon, associate attorney with the Waukesha office of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren S.C., Milwaukee, received the Small Business Legal Assistance Award. Maggie Foote, innkeeper of Oaklawn Bed & Breakfast, Menomonie, received the Home Based Business Champion Award and Joel Weitz, president of George Vitense Golfland, Inc., Madison, received the Jeffrey Butland Family Owned Small Business Award.

National Association of the Remodeling Industry Inc.
The National Association of the Remodeling Industry Inc. (NARI), Des Plaines, Ill., recognized several Wisconsin companies for the 2007 Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards. To be considered for a CotY Award, a company must be a NARI member in good standing. Wisconsin was part of Region 3 North Central. E. Miller & Associates Inc., Cedarburg, received an award for Residential Kitchen $60,000 to $100,000. Brillo Home Improvements Inc., Milwaukee, received an award for Residential Addition $100,000 to $250,000. Bartelt-Filo Design Build, Menomonee Falls, received an award for Residential Addition Over $250,000 and for Residential Universal Design. KD Poolscapes Ltd., Franskville, received an award for Residential Exterior Specialty. High Velocity Communications Inc., Waukesha, was selected by Gencor Industries, Inc., Orlando, Fla., to publish a quarterly magazine which will be distributed to its customers and prospects in the hot mix asphalt industry. Gencor Innovations is a 20-page, full-color publication featuring customer success stories, new technology, product focus features, product service and support, historical milestones and customer lifestyle features. Gencor Industries manufactures hot mix asphalt plants, soil remediation plants, combustion systems and screening equipment for the road and highway construction industry.

Celtic Inc.
Celtic Inc., Brookfield, was selected by Bemis Health Care, a division of Bemis Manufacturing Co., Sheboygan Falls, to help promote the company’s Quick-Drain System. The Quick-Drain System is a vacuum-sealed container created for the efficient, sanitary disposal of liquid infectious wastes. Celtic will design and produce print advertising as well as develop a company Web site for Quick-Drain.

Blue Horse Inc.
Blue Horse Inc., Milwaukee, partnered with Connecture Inc., Waukesha and Atlanta, to develop and implement a public relations program. Connecture provides Web-based automated sales, service and processing solutions to the health insurance industry.

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce
The Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, along with sponsors Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, Milwaukee, and Virchow, Krause & Co. LLP, Madison, recognized Astronautics Corporation of America, Milwaukee, and Brady Corp., Milwaukee, with 2006 Manufacturer of the Year Awards. Astronautics received an award for High Tech Research and Development and Brady received an award for Corporate Excellence.
