Komatsu Mining Corp. is nearing completion of its $285 million headquarters and manufacturing facility on East Greenfield Avenue in Milwaukee’s Harbor District. The maker of mining shovels and other equipment acquired Milwaukee-based Joy Global Inc. in 2017, announcing plans for the new campus about a year later.

We Energies led a multimillion-dollar environmental cleanup to prepare the development site, which was occupied for decades by coal-burning company Solvay Coke & Gas.

The new Komatsu headquarters campus includes 170,000 square feet of office space, a 20,000-square-foot museum and training building and 410,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Construction began in fall of 2020 and is slated to finish up this spring. Work is complete on the office building, according to the company, and factory construction is on track for substantial completion in the coming weeks.
