The Bradley Family Foundation and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation have opened up the application process for the Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists program.
The program, in its 12th cycle, is made possible by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund and distributes unrestricted funds to artists to support their new works or works in progress.
The program honors artist Mary L. Nohl, of Fox Point, who died in December 2001 at age 87 and bequeathed $9.6 million to the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. Her contribution, one of the largest ever made by a single donor to the foundation, primarily backs local visual arts and arts education programming.
Through the 2014 fellowship program, three established artists will each be awarded $15,000 and another four emerging artists will be granted $5,000 toward their individual work. Artists practicing in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington Counties are eligible for funding.
Along with receiving funds, selected artists will take part in an exhibition in fall 2015. Their work will also be featured in an exhibition catalogue that will be released nationally.
Nohl Fellows will be chosen by a panel of visual arts professionals from across the country: Courtney Fink, executive director of Southern Exposure in San Francisco, Calif.; Daniel Fuller, director of the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine; and Naima J. Keith, assistant curator at The Studio Museum in Harlem, N.Y.
Applications for the fellowship program are due by Thursday, Oct. 2. Fellows will be announced on Monday, Nov. 3.
To guide interested artists through the application process, the Lynden Sculpture Garden, which facilitates the fellowship program, will hold three free public workshops. Each workshop will be led by Polly Morris, executive director of the Lynden Sculpture Garden, and past Nohl Fellows.
Workshops are scheduled for Monday, Sept. 8; Wednesday, Sept. 10; and Sunday, Sept. 14.
