Art Museum and War Memorial reach tentative deal for renovation

Groups negotiating on behalf of the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Milwaukee County War Memorial over who will control the War Memorial building have reached a tentative deal, Milwaukee County Board Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic and Supervisor Gerry Broderick announced.

The Art Museum is a tenant in the War Memorial building, which needs $25 million in renovations and repairs. The Art Museum has agreed to pay for 60 percent of the renovation cost and Milwaukee County has agreed to pay $10 million toward the project. In pledging to help pay for the renovations, the Art Museum sought to take over management facility. The Milwaukee County Board appointed former Justice Janine Geske to mediate the negotiations between the two institutions.

“We are grateful to Justice Geske and to the negotiating teams for their extraordinary and efficient work,” Dimitrijevic said.

Details of the tentative agreement between the Art Museum and the War Memorial were not immediately announced. The deal must be approved by boards for the Art Museum and War Memorial and the Milwaukee County Board and County Executive Chris Abele.
