American TV closeout prices disputed

Some price discrepancies were discovered during a Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Weights and Measures inspection at the American TV & Appliance liquidation sale.

DATCP’s price verification survey at each of the seven Wisconsin stores Monday showed 5.5 percent of the 325 items it evaluated rang up higher than the advertised price.

At an Appleton store, one item was $314.44 more than its listed price at the register.

The DATCP warned customers to be aware of the price at the register. Customers who are overcharged are entitled to a refund under Wisconsin law, which requires that stores charge the lowest advertised price.

Madison-based American TV announced it is going out of business last week, leaving 989 employees out of work.

The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau also recently warned consumers to be extra vigilant before purchasing items at the sale, because liquidation sales are often handled by third parties and the prices could actually be inflated, rather than a discount.
