Industry: Hazardous waste and industrial waste disposal

Innovation: Developed the VacSimizer.

Last year, Advanced Waste Services Inc., an industrial waste removal service headquartered in West Allis, created the VacSimizer, a vacuum system mounted on a semi-truck trailer, which the company uses for hauling liquid.

The VacSimizer has the cargo capacity of a 5,000-gallon semi-tanker, but is easier to maneuver. It also has the largest legal payload in the vacuum trucking industry, according to the company.

The VacSimizer is operated by one individual and replaces a loading process requiring the use of multiple trucks and manpower to do the same job, especially in tight areas.

The company has been able to reduce transportation costs by 50 percent with the VacSimizer innovation. After four months the innovation added $350,000 in revenue to company.

“It has performed fabulously and delivered higher margins,” said Advanced Waste president Mike Malatesta.

With a pending patent for the unique maneuvering technology, Advanced Waste Services is looking for applications in other industries. According to Malatesta the patent would allow for application outside of the waste industry.

The company is currently exploring options for manufacturing and marketing the VacSimizer in hopes of marketing the product by 2011.

“This would be a new revenue generator and grow our reputation throughout the U.S. and Canada to meet people as a result through equipment sales,” Malatesta said. “We have acquired a great door opener.”

Advanced Waste Services Inc. has 142 employees in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania. The company had revenue of $32 million in 2009.
