ABQC Corp. in Milwaukee plans to shut down

Closure to eliminate 35 jobs

Milwaukee-based ABQC Corp. plans to close its business by March 31, eliminating 35 jobs at the metal finishing company.

Alex Antonio, chief executive officer of ABQC (America’s Best Quality Coatings), sent a letter to state officials last week notifying them of the shutdown. The letter did not specify a reason for the closing. Antonio directed requests for comment to Joel Lee, an attorney for the company.

Lee said the company’s owner, Bill Nimtz, had unsuccessfully sought a buyer and decided it was best to wind down operations. He said Nimtz is prioritizing taking care of employees and making sure suppliers and customers are made whole.

The letter to the state says employees have been notified of their termination dates and the company plans to pay all earned wages and benefits. The employees were not represented by a union.

ABQC operates a 230,000-square-foot facility at 1602 S. First St. in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood. The company was previously the metal finishing operation for Allen-Bradley and became its own standalone operation in 1990.

Arthur covers banking and finance and the economy at BizTimes while also leading special projects as an associate editor. He also spent five years covering manufacturing at BizTimes. He previously was managing editor at The Waukesha Freeman. He is a graduate of Carroll University and did graduate coursework at Marquette. A native of southeastern Wisconsin, he is also a nationally certified gymnastics judge and enjoys golf on the weekends.
