40,752 in Wisconsin signed up for Obamacare in first three months

According to a new report released today by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), 40,752 Wisconsin residents have selected a health insurance plan through the new federal marketplace.

The data, which covers enrollment figures from Oct. 1 through Dec. 28, shows a significant increase in enrollment in the month of December.

At the end of November, a total of 364,682 people had enrolled for Obamacare coverage. 5,303 individuals had enrolled in Wisconsin.

Nationwide, nearly 2.2 million persons have selected a marketplace plan during the first three months of the open enrollment period. HHS said the new enrollment numbers include both those who have paid a premium and those who have not yet paid a premium.

The new HHS report also includes the first data showing plan selections by gender and age.
The majority of those who have selected a plan are female – 54 percent cumulatively in the U.S., and a slightly higher percentage in Wisconsin, at 56 percent.

Nationally, 24 percent of those who have enrolled are between the ages of 18 and 34 – an age group HHS has highlighted. 6 percent are under 18, 15 percent are between 35 and 44, 22 percent are between 45 and 54, and 33 percent are between 55 and 64 years old.

A somewhat older population in Wisconsin has enrolled, with roughly two-thirds of those who have selected a plan over the age of 45.

19 percent of those who have enrolled in the Badger state are between 18 and 34 years old, short of the federal mark. 4 percent are under 18 years old, 11 percent are between 35 and 44, 21 percent are between 45 and 54, and 45 percent are between 55 and 64 years old.

Also in Wisconsin, the most popular “Metal Level” plan is the Silver Plan. 69 percent have selected the Silver Plan, 19 percent selected Bronze, 11 percent selected Gold, 2 percent selected Platinum, and 1 percent selected the lowest level Catastrophic Plan.

In total nationwide, 60 percent selected the Silver Plan, 20 percent selected Bronze, 13 percent selected Gold, 7 percent selected Platinum, and 1 percent selected Catastrophic.

A large majority of those who have purchased plans have done so with financial assistance, both in total, at 79 percent, and in Wisconsin, at 88 percent.
